Kōichirō Matsuura is a Japanese diplomat. Born in 1937, he is the former Director-General of UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization). He was first elected in 1999 to a six-year term and reelected in 2005 for four years. During his tenure, Matsuura oversaw numerous initiatives to promote education, science, culture, and communication globally. He was succeeded by Irina Bokova in November 2009.
