Waris Dirie is a Somali model, author, actress, and human rights activist. She is a prominent advocate in the fight against female genital mutilation (FGM). From 1997 to 2003, Dirie served as a UN special ambassador against FGM. In 2002, she established her own organization in Vienna, called the Desert Flower Foundation, dedicated to combating FGM. She has received numerous awards for her activism, including the Chevalier de la Légion d’Honneur.
