Patrice Chéreau, born in 1944, was a highly regarded French opera and theatre director, filmmaker, actor, and producer. He was celebrated in France for his theatrical productions and internationally for his films *La Reine Margot* and *Intimacy*. Chéreau also gained acclaim for his staging of the Jahrhundertring, the centenary Ring cycle at the Bayreuth Festival in 1976. He received numerous awards, including the Cannes Jury Prize and the Golden Berlin Bear, and served as president of the jury at the 2003 Cannes Film Festival.
