Mary McAleese is an Irish activist, lawyer, academic, author, and former politician. She served as the President of Ireland from 1997 to 2011. She was the second female president of Ireland, succeeding Mary Robinson, making her the first woman in the world to succeed another woman as president. Born in Belfast, she is also the first president of Ireland to have come from Ulster.
