He gained prominence as an investigative journalist in Sweden, notably exposing a secret intelligence organization in 1973. Guillou is also a successful novelist, with popular series of spy fiction novels about Carl Hamilton and historical fiction novels about Arn Magnusson. He owns one of the largest publishing companies in Sweden, Piratförlaget.
