Ion Iliescu is a Romanian politician and engineer who served as the first and third President of Romania after the fall of communism. He held the presidency from 1990 to 1996 and again from 2000 to 2004. He played a significant role in the transition of Romania to a democratic state. He founded the Social Democratic Party (PSD) and remained its honorary president, wielding considerable influence in Romanian politics for many years.
