Émile Jamil Lahoud is a Lebanese politician who served as the 11th president of Lebanon from 1998 to 2007. During his presidency, the Israeli occupation of Southern Lebanon ended in May 2000. He focused on downplaying sectarianism and rearming the Lebanese army, with support from Syria. Lahoud was closely allied to Syrian president Bashar al-Assad during the Syrian occupation of Lebanon.
