He served as Prime Minister of France from 1995 to 1997 under President Jacques Chirac. Prior to that, he was Minister of Foreign Affairs and Minister of the Budget. He was also the mayor of Bordeaux for many years and served as president of the Union for a Popular Movement (UMP) party.
